This new version feels very much like a safe bet for people who already love the first film—though it might disappoint others. I’ve always considered the original Flatliners to be merely passable, really. It seemed like they had a chance to do something truly unsettling with its concept, exploring themes of mortality and creating genuine suspense. So when I heard about this 2017 remake, I wasn't shocked; the basic story felt like it could easily be adapted again. This film from Niels Arden Oplev is flawed, and definitely doesn’t live up to what I hoped for in the original movie, but at least it brings some fresh elements to the table, leaning into supernatural aspects to generate scares. The filmmakers deserve credit for making a daring choice with the plot, which makes criticisms about its lack of originality seem unfair. If you're already attached to the original film, there’s a good chance you won’t enjoy this one. But if you don’t have any particular feelings toward it, like I do, then it’s an acceptable way to spend some time. Those who haven’t seen the 1990 movie might find some minor surprises and explorations of what happens after death. It gets a 6/10 from me.
