It thankfully avoids being another five evenings trapped at home with a bear obsessed with pizza, though it still dragged on until an obvious ending arrived. Piper Rubio plays “Abby,” who is missing her former robotic companions, while Josh Hutcherson portrays her older brother "Mike," entangled in a hesitant romantic situation with “Vanessa” (Elizabeth Lail). During one particularly uncomfortable date for Mike and Vanessa, she slips away to visit the surprisingly easy-to-reach abandoned amusement park, where she spends time longing for her lost friends. However, the sinister “Charlotte” isn’t done with “Abby,” utilizing "Chico" and others as devoted instruments, to devise a clever and violent scheme aimed at punishing all the negligent parents whom she holds responsible for her own gruesome death in 2022—or last year, according to the narrative. The billing of Matthew Lillard merits special mention in the credits, and it’s reasonable to speculate that Josh Hutcherson hasn't received his payment for next year’s “Hunger Games” prequel yet, otherwise he wouldn’t have agreed to participate in this uninspired film. It feels like a standard video game experience, leaning on familiar elements to try and win over viewers, and while there are moments of diverting gore, the entire project is an entirely superfluous continuation of a movie that lacked originality from the start. The plot would benefit significantly from losing thirty minutes without any detriment to the storyline, and I sincerely hope we won’t have to endure additional time with these awkward characters—whether they run on batteries or not.
