Bobby Nicholson portrays a pianist from a well-off musical family who has rejected a comfortable path to embrace a transient lifestyle working construction when needed. This wandering existence seems to suit him; he’s someone who prefers fleeting enjoyment and avoids any kind of dedication, whether it's with his girlfriend, other people, or even himself. Over time, he starts feeling dissatisfied with the choices he’s made and the hollowness they’ve created, leading him back home to find that his father has been experiencing seizures. This situation forces Bobby to begin reevaluating things. It had been three years since his last visit, so there's a lot of reconciling needed on all sides—and some people aren’t immediately ready to offer forgiveness. The central question becomes whether any emotional release is possible or if the damage runs too deep. In my opinion, this represents Nicholson’s finest work onscreen. With genuinely moving writing and pacing that occasionally resembles a documentary, we witness a man who initially elicits little sympathy reveal his shortcomings, inner struggles, and humanity—though there's still a chance you might not connect with him. It's welcome to see Ralph Waite, known for playing “John Walton,” in such a significant and complex role as “Carl.” Praise is also due for Karen Black’s emotionally powerful performance as "Rayette," the long-suffering girlfriend who frequently makes you wish she would simply leave him. The film’s soundtrack significantly enhances the experience, blending mostly country music ballads with exceptional classical piano pieces—ostensibly played by Bobby and his sister “Partita” (Lois Smith). Fundamentally, it's a coming-of-age story, but not in the typical sense of youthful romance; instead, it explores adulthood and maturation for a man living in a self-imposed, confining world.
