Given Dick Van Dyke's presence and the film’s aesthetic reminiscent of the 1960s – the era in which it was made – I must admit I briefly questioned whether this was a Disney production; so many have blurred together over time. However, it wasn’t, apparently. It had a rather unusual release in Canada under the name *A Garden of Cucumbers*, which makes slightly more sense once you realize that's also the title of the novel it adapts, itself derived from a biblical reference. It’s an agreeable and undemanding comedy, suitable for viewing with both family and friends because the story is straightforward enough to not require intense focus. There’s a romantic element present as well, although it doesn’t quite fit the modern rom-com mold. And I suppose once you consider Dick Van Dyke and Barbara Feldon, the strong supporting cast of character actors also contributed to my initial thought that Disney might have been involved. It's rare to see so much care put into casting smaller roles. We watched it as a holiday film, although for most of its running time it doesn’t feel like one. However, Christmas is eventually mentioned and the final scenes unfold at Gimbels on Christmas Eve. I don’t think I'd actively choose to watch this again, but it was entertaining enough that I wouldn’t change the channel if it happened to be playing while I was otherwise occupied. Like when I’m visiting with friends or relatives.
