Going into 'First Kid', I wasn’t anticipating much, and surprisingly, it ended up being slightly better than that initial impression. However, it remains something I wouldn’t suggest watching. Sinbad delivers the most interesting performance among the actors as Simms. Even so, his work isn't particularly impressive or remarkable. The rest of the cast is largely forgettable, although it was a pleasant surprise to see Robert Guillaume—who played Rafiki—appear; I hadn’t realized what he looked like until then, but when he laughed in one of his early scenes, I recognized him immediately. The story is where the movie really falls short. Just looking at the cover creates a bad feeling, and the first few minutes don't inspire much more hope. It’s incredibly obvious what’s going to happen, and it feels disorganized—the villain doesn't show up until the last twenty or so minutes, meaning you spend roughly seventy minutes waiting for the predictable events to unfold. I have seen worse from Disney's live-action films, but this is still a disappointing effort from the studio.
