It’s an easygoing comedy centered around two Oregon settlers. John Magaro portrays "Cookie," who works as both cook and baker, and he joins forces with the ambitious "King-Lu" (Orion Lee). They soon figure out that there's potential to earn a good sum by catering to the cravings of their fellow settlers. When they learn that the local supervisor has had a cow brought in—the only one around for quite some distance—they start an underhanded operation, stealing milk from it to improve their baked goods. This venture promises wealth, but also carries danger; Toby Jones’ character, the factor, doesn't know that he is unknowingly receiving treats made with what should be his own cow’s milk. The plot unfolds in a somewhat foreseeable manner, though it remains pleasant to observe as they attempt to outsmart their increasingly perceptive employer. Director Kelly Reichardt allows the narrative to unfold gradually and entertainingly while also providing an authentic look at the difficult living circumstances faced by these people seeking gold, land, or even just milk. William Tyler contributes a nicely balanced musical score, and seeing it is worthwhile—though a large theater isn’t really necessary for the experience.
