It’s difficult to imagine being in the shoes of "Nishi," the character portrayed by Takeshi Kitano. He’s grappling with immense personal loss: his child passed away a few years prior, his wife is seriously ill and hospitalized, and his police partner suffered an injury that left him paralyzed. Understandably, this has led to some instability and questionable choices in his life. When his wife is given the opportunity to return home, he’s resolved to make it possible—but securing the necessary funds proves challenging. He ends up borrowing money from individuals with a reputation for being dangerous. Now driven by a desire to be near his dying wife, his decisions become increasingly risky and involve escalating violence as those he owes demand repayment, either in cash or through other means. The film manages to blend tenderness and harshness surprisingly well. It reveals how even the strongest people can be weakened by tragedy and despair—and when that person is also a skilled killer, the danger intensifies for everyone involved. There isn't much conversation; it’s largely Kitano responding to circumstances while trying to maintain a sense of normalcy and confronting his growing feelings of responsibility. Watching him navigate these situations can be captivating. The pacing occasionally feels slow, and certain elements feel somewhat repetitive, but it presents a unique kind of dark drama that offers a glimpse into the humanity of someone whose actions aren’t driven by ambition, wealth, or vengeance.
