Zac Efron’s appearance might suggest otherwise, but as he ages, there's something increasingly robotic about his demeanor. He used to possess a certain appeal, whereas now he seems to spend all his time working out, getting grooming treatments, and drinking some sort of green juice concoction. This, combined with a rather uninspired performance, is compounded by the presence of Ryan Kiera Armstrong, who delivers a solid portrayal as "Charlie," leaving us with an unremarkable version of this fairly simple Stephen King narrative. It certainly features impressive special effects, but not much else. There's a plot: a young girl can trigger explosions when upset; her father has the ability to control people, which causes his eyes to bleed – a rather useful remedy for smokers attempting to quit; and her mother, Sidney Lemmon, also possesses an unusual trait—though I’ve forgotten what it was (but it certainly wasn't putting out fires). A group of individuals who have genetically modified this family are pursuing them, and the central question is who will emerge victorious. It would be engaging if you were still invested, but after about thirty minutes, I simply lost interest. Considering that this film revolves around fire – or conflagration – it’s ultimately a disappointing letdown.
