This film manages to be both funny and genuinely touching, though it does lean a little too heavily on crude humor. Two well-liked high school football players, Eric Christian Olsen and Nicholas D'Agosto, choose cheerleading camp over football camp during the summer with the goal of attracting girls. Things don’t go as planned when one develops feelings for a lead cheerleader (Sarah Roemer), and they both become invested in helping the squad succeed at the competition. The best teen comedies aim to be entertaining and amusing while avoiding excessive vulgarity, often incorporating deeper themes—like "Clueless" from 1995 or “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” in 1982. Fortunately, "Fired Up," released in 2009, is consistently humorous throughout and includes some genuinely heartwarming moments. Even though it was made for direct-to-video release, you can tell a considerable amount of care went into the production. The success of the movie relies on Olsen and D'Agosto having good chemistry, and they deliver. Olsen was 31 and D’Agosto was 28 during filming—not exactly high schoolers—and while they do a decent job of looking younger, their general presence gives them away. The female cast is also appealing; Sarah Roemer is attractive as Carly, and there are several other beautiful women featured, including the brunette cheerleading coach. I would have rated "Fired Up" an 'A-' if it weren't for some unnecessary crude elements, implied sexuality (there aren’t any explicit scenes), and a surplus of jokes centered around homosexuality. These aspects prevent it from achieving true excellence in my view. The film has a running time of 90 minutes and was filmed in the Los Angeles area. GRADE: B
