This movie, "Anna" (played by Jessie Buckley) and "Ryan" (Jeremy Allen White), have obtained a certificate—a document supposedly confirming their compatibility as a couple. She used to be a teacher but is now looking for work, so when a job opens up at the very organization that facilitated their connection, she immediately seeks out the boss, “Duncan” (Luke Wilson). There, she argues that she’d excel at training other couples hoping to have their relationships assessed and validated in order to achieve this verification. She gets hired and is teamed with "Amir" (Riz Ahmed), who also seems to be harboring a secret. What follows just doesn't feel believable, and I didn't find any of the attempts at satire particularly effective. The tests themselves are somewhat amusing, though. One involves “Rob” (Christian Meer) literally sniffing out his girlfriend while blindfolded; another has people attempting sustained eye contact while submerged in ten feet of cold water—likely more concerned with avoiding drowning than expressing affection! Then there’s the most extreme part: fingernails are removed and placed into a bizarre machine resembling something from "Space 1999," which then delivers a verdict of 0%, 50%, or the desired 100% – supposedly guaranteeing lasting happiness. The idea is that this could eliminate divorce and marital unhappiness permanently. Once you’re in love, it's forever...! I must say, Buckley occasionally demonstrates her vocal talent, and Ahmed is pleasant to look at (though that’s about all I can really say), but the plot itself is absurd; the notion that adults would engage with such outlandish situations stretches credibility too far. It isn't a comedy, and the predictable romantic elements are accompanied by an excessive amount of physical harm. At times it even seems sincere, and after thirty minutes, I understood why I was watching this film alone. It was nice to hear Alison Moyet on a big screen sound system, but that’s essentially all there is to recommend it. He really should get his car window repaired.
