The film’s title, "Fingernails," is perfectly suited for this science fiction story with an unusual premise. While it doesn't fully realize all of its possible ideas and meanings, Christos Nikou delivers a well-paced and stimulating commentary on how relationships and technological advancements shape people's actions. Jessie Buckley and Riz Ahmed give capable performances in what becomes a familiar plot, but one that remains consistently interesting, humorous, and focused on the characters’ humanity. The movie is let down by muddled messaging and an abrupt, seemingly insincere finale that doesn’t serve well the exploration of love's intricacies and strength shown throughout.
