It’s striking to consider how difficult it is for people trying to earn a living with a small fishing boat. Following that, the film unfolds as a rather uninspired family story about two stepbrothers entangled in a drug smuggling operation while they struggle to keep their business going by collecting drugs left at sea and delivering them to land. When one of these deliveries goes wrong, the family faces the harsh reality of their ruthless collaborators, and also finds themselves under increasing scrutiny from coast guard agencies in both the United States and Canada. Things are further complicated when their father (Tommy Lee Jones) receives a cancer diagnosis, prompting the two sons – "Tom" (Ben Foster) and "Charlie" (Toby Wallace) – to feel determined not to disappoint him. It doesn’t quite adhere to standard narrative conventions, and the performances—particularly those of Tim Daly and Jenny Ortega—are notably weak, leaving the other actors with subpar lines that wouldn't be recognized by the Pulitzer committee. There are some well-executed shots of the sea, conveying a sense of how exposed they are on the fishing boat as conditions worsen, but unfortunately, this is the only aspect of the film that offers any excitement. I would suggest skipping it altogether, if you don’t mind my saying so.
