The protagonist, a young man called “Alf” (played by Andres Revo), comes back home to his affluent parents in Mexico after spending time in the United States, but he seems deeply uncomfortable. Despite being warmly greeted by his friends, he feels drawn to return to America. Hints about his unease begin to emerge when he meets “Oliver,” a younger ukulele player (Joaquín Emanuel), who is described by his companions—perhaps accurately, perhaps not—as a gay stoner. He also has a cousin, “Diana” (Arianna Hermosillo), who shows considerable interest in Alf, but it’s apparent that his affections lie elsewhere and that one of his friends, “Borja” (Héctor Kuri Hernández), is vying for Diana's attention too. Following this, in a manner reminiscent of "I Know What You Did Last Summer," a violent event stemming from alcohol consumption leads the group of schoolmates to support each other, placing significant strain on Alf’s connection with the now-distraught Oliver. The story’s resolution feels hurried and ultimately doesn't quite work as it pivots away from exploring the developing, somewhat concealed feelings between the two boys toward a more politically expedient and frankly distasteful outcome. It unfortunately highlights homophobic sentiments within a generation that one would have anticipated being more evolved by 2024, indicating there is still considerable effort needed to foster acceptance and understanding; however, these are broader observations that don’t necessarily arise from the actors' portrayals as the narrative unfolds. The performances are adequate, but the story suffers from a lack of believability and a sense of unity, leaving me uncertain about what director Alejandro Andrade intended for audiences to grasp from this film.
