The film follows Owen (Spike Fearn), the sound technician at a student gathering, who becomes infatuated with Emily. As she’s preparing to leave, he asks for her phone number, but in what seems like either carelessness or an intentional act, she provides only ten of the eleven digits required. Completely captivated, he resolves to locate her, which proves far from simple given the numerous women named Emily attending the university. His initial investigation leads him to an American student (Angourie Rice) who needs a unique project to finish her studies and potentially obtain a work visa. She consents to assist him, but with her own hidden agenda always present, she inadvertently complicates matters for a young man whose straightforward request spirals into a confrontation with a wave of intensely negative attitudes that label him in various unflattering ways. Simultaneously, he’s navigating the process of selling his late mother's house, which he shares with his brother Matt (Jack Riddiford) and his girlfriend Freya (Isabella Laughland), and struggles to understand why the genuine Emily isn't responding, given all the attention surrounding his search. Will this man ever find the woman of his dreams before he’s further manipulated by one person and potentially ostracized by many others? Fearn delivers a consistently engaging performance in this amusingly crafted and swiftly moving comedy that has some sharp edges. It satirizes the absurdity of extreme political sensitivity, those who are overly self-important, and—thanks to a few pointed remarks from Minnie Driver—those individuals who launch accusations without considering any rationale. It's an enjoyable experience, though it might feel slightly extended, particularly towards the conclusion, making it worthwhile to view.
