This isn't particularly original; it borrows heavily from familiar road trip and robot movie tropes. However, I believe it might be the first true robot road movie I’ve encountered, and Tom Hanks and his robotic companion "Jeff"—along with their dog—deliver a fairly enjoyable performance. The narrative establishes that a widespread radiation event has left him as seemingly the only person alive. Driven by an impending storm threatening his home, he builds his new friend and they set off toward San Francisco in a customized motorhome. The film maintains a decent rhythm throughout, and Hanks, who isn't typically among my preferred actors, gives a surprisingly compelling portrayal as he and "Jeff" start to learn from one another, with mixed results. Brief flashbacks are used to provide glimpses into the fate of his family and how he arrived at his current situation, and as their travels continue, the story explores what it means to be human, hinting that things aren't quite right. It feels about twenty minutes too long, and some of the introductory scenes drag on a bit excessively, but despite not being a masterpiece, Hanks puts in enough effort to keep the movie moving forward most of the time.
