To truly appreciate this film, you have to look past the idea that it's simply another revenge or slasher movie where you can turn your brain off. If you engage with it, especially on an artistic level, you might find something to like. The plot is straightforward, occasionally a little illogical, but it’s presented in a visually striking way. Some reviewers have mentioned David Lynch when discussing this film, and that comparison feels accurate; there's definitely a “Lynchian” quality to it. I personally found the movie beautiful. I noticed some people felt it was too dark, and honestly, I'm glad I got my new OLED TV in time to watch it because I’m sure my old LED-LCD wouldn’t have handled all those dark scenes well. The picture looked fantastic on the OLED though. Those somewhat unsettling nighttime sequences were very enjoyable. Sure, you could argue that the lighting was unrealistic, but really, the whole story is a bit outlandish, so just relax and enjoy it for what it is: a visually appealing experience. The narrative itself is a little strange. A man trains a very young girl to seek revenge after his wife and daughter were killed by a group of violent young men. That’s obviously a complicated setup. Why didn't he simply take care of them himself, since he seemed capable of inflicting harm? Well, I suppose the writer thought that would have been too predictable. It’s a fair point. The actors do a respectable job. The main character might come across as overly innocent, but she still performs her role well. The villains are effective at being creepy and cruel. However, there are quite a few questions left unanswered; for instance, how did he initially acquire the girl? I honestly think the movie could have been longer. It probably suffered from budget limitations, which might explain that. I felt that once the “hunt” began, it could have been explored more fully. The ending felt somewhat hurried to me. Overall, I enjoyed this film. It’s visually beautiful, a little odd (in a positive way), somewhat unsettling, and has a decent story. Perhaps it doesn't quite reach four stars, but it's closer to that rating than three.
