The film manages to be inventive, bloody, funny, and a fitting farewell for horror icon Tony Todd. (As is customary in an FD movie, Bludworth pauses to offer some darkly insightful reflections on mortality.) This installment succeeds across the board, from the impressive beginning to the creative, often humorous, and certainly graphic deaths, plus it includes several appearances by people who might seem familiar if you’ve seen previous movies. The script also introduces unexpected elements to maintain viewer engagement, and I was surprised both by how good the music is and how effectively the humor works; the writing team really delivered. My only concern is that Tony Todd appears frail, which was upsetting for a horror enthusiast like myself. It’s comforting to know he pursued his passion until the very end, though. Skip Disney.
