Roller Toaster. The third movie in the Final Destination series sticks closely to what made the first two successful, without attempting any major departures. This time, a roller coaster accident kicks off the events, which Wendy Christensen (played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead) foresees. Like the earlier installments, the person having the vision and some of their companions become alarmed and leave the ride, only to witness it actually crash and result in numerous brutal deaths for those still on board. Predictably, the survivors then begin to die off in equally unpleasant ways, suggesting that a force is determined to claim the lives that were initially avoided. The initial part of Final Destination 3 is really well done; the opening credits are set against carnival and fairground scenes designed to create an unsettling atmosphere, accompanied by a strange musical score. The crash itself is also handled very effectively—anyone who’s nervous about roller coasters will likely have a reason to be after seeing this! However, it then falls back into familiar patterns, with the younger characters being eliminated in increasingly creative ways, featuring more gore and a noticeable amount of dark humor (the inclusion of “Love Roller Coaster” by The Ohio Players is inspired). This film introduces photographs as a plot device, which is a welcome addition and helps to elevate it beyond some fairly predictable conversations. It’s a comfortable and reliable entry in the series, and Winstead stands out as the strongest young lead actress throughout the franchise. As with any horror movie—especially those that become franchises—some viewers will enjoy it while others won't, but ultimately it delivers exactly what the previous two films did. So, if you were already a fan of those movies, this one works just as well. The 2-disc DVD includes an enjoyable “choose your fate” option, which offers slightly different versions of the film with some experimentation. It’s also suggested that you crank up your home theater system for the roller coaster scenes. 7/10
