This follow-up is a good one, perhaps even slightly superior to its predecessor. The initial "Final Destination" from 2000 was an inventive entry in the 'Dead Teenager Movie' genre because the antagonist was Death itself—the Grim Reaper—presented as an unseen spiritual force. The story centers on individuals, primarily young people, who narrowly avoid a catastrophic event thanks to one person’s premonition. The rest of the movie then depicts Death methodically eliminating those who escaped its grasp, often through elaborate and improbable chain reactions. The first film began with a plane crash; this 2003 installment opens with a devastating highway collision; the third involves an accident on a roller coaster, and so forth. There are now five movies in the franchise, all adhering to the same fundamental plot—different characters and minor variations aside—and they’re consistently well-made from a technical standpoint. Personal preference often comes down to liking the specific cast members, the death sequences, or the settings, because beyond those elements, they're fundamentally similar; the fifth film does introduce an interesting new element where Death’s intended victim can find someone else to take their place. Ali Larter reprises her role as a supporting character while A.J. Cook carries the story as the 'final girl.’ Keegan Connor Tracy also has a significant female part, and Sarah Carter appears in a smaller one. Though it's a decent group of women, I feel that more could have been done with their characters. Michael Landes plays a state trooper on the male side of things. Jonathan Cherry, Terrence ‘T.C.’ Carson, and James Kirk also appear, listed by their level of importance to the narrative. Tony Todd makes his second appearance out of four in the series as a mortician who seems to possess more knowledge than he should. I personally found this one slightly better than the original, but like the first film, the latter portion isn’t quite as compelling as the beginning. I'm not sure if the final scene was intended to be frightening—it actually made me laugh. The movie has a running time of 1 hour and 30 minutes and was filmed in the Vancouver, British Columbia area, including Campbell River, even though the story is set near New York City. GRADE: B/B-
