The performance by Topol as Tevye is exceptional within this story about a Jewish father living in rural Russia during the late 1800s, who faces the challenge of finding partners for his three daughters. The narrative centers on his attempts to secure appropriate marriages for them. Through well-known songs like "Matchmaker" and "If I Was Rich Man," we witness his journey and the difficulties he encounters. Taking place against a setting marked by religious prejudice that culminates in a pogrom, this is an intelligent and captivating portrayal of the difficult circumstances faced by rural Russians, particularly within the Jewish community. Norman Jewison manages to balance accounts of severe religious discrimination with a vibrant and optimistic sense of togetherness, creating a compelling and approachable experience. Jerry Bock’s memorable music—paired with Sheldon Harnick's clever lyrics—makes this production as strong as any in its category; while it feels slightly slow at the beginning of the second act, it surpasses the three-hour mark with grace.
