Many movie categories exist—spaghetti Westerns, Police Procedural Mysteries, Epic Fantasy like Lord of the Rings—and these areas typically allow for a good deal of creativity and variation. Romantic Comedies appear to be more constrained; there's an established structure that’s generally followed with only slight alterations. The story often involves characters who initially seem incompatible, one character becomes distracted by another romantic possibility (as seen in Fever Pitch, where it's the Boston Red Sox), a separation occurs leading to unhappiness for at least one person, and the individual deemed responsible usually performs some significant act to repair the relationship. Humor and romance are also standard components. I consider Fever Pitch a very good illustration of this type of film. The two lead characters are funny and appealing, generating numerous laughs. They seem genuinely kind, and there’s a strong connection between them. You don't need to be interested in baseball to appreciate it (although maybe fans of the Yankees should avoid it), but as with most romantic comedies, you might want to put aside any skepticism for the time being, particularly if you are male watching it with your partner. If she doesn’t mind the sports element, you can simply let the romantic scenes unfold naturally. It's one of those films that I am inclined to watch whenever it appears on television, regardless of what else is happening.
