It seems Adam Driver may have hoped taking on "House of Gucci" would prepare him for portraying this celebrated Italian racing figure, but instead, the final product feels reminiscent of Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro.” While there are some exciting depictions of the races—though the initial scenes feel awkward with Driver's face digitally placed onto a car in a manner that seems childish—the majority of the film focuses on his complicated marriage to Laura (Penélope Cruz, who delivers an unusual performance lacking her typical spark) and how he balances his family, including past hardships, alongside a second family with Lina (Shailene Woodley) and son Piero (Giuseppe Festinese), a relationship his wife is unaware of. The company faces financial difficulties; the production cars aren't covering the costs of racing, and with impending bankruptcy, Enzo must place all his resources into the Mille Miglia endurance race, hoping for victory and increased sales. This final thirty minutes truly elevates the film. You can practically sense the smell of gasoline as the vehicles speed along the narrow and dangerous roads of post-war Italy. A sense of camaraderie among the drivers is also present, a recognition of the mutual respect they share—particularly given the frequent presence of danger and potential disaster within those cockpits. At its strongest moments, it resembles an intense, beautifully shot documentary, but it’s weighed down by excessive, aimless melodrama and a lead actor who simply lacks charisma. I didn't dislike it, but it spends too much time on a troubled marriage rather than the engineering that would have truly captured my interest.
