This is a deliberately paced slasher film set at a house in New Mexico during a storm. A young woman, Makenzie Vega, has her car hit by a strange man, Bill Sage, and they trade details. That was an error. “Fender Bender,” made in 2016, feels like a throwback to classic slashers from the seventies – films such as “Home for the Holidays,” “Savage Weekend,” and the original “Halloween” (the first two were created long before the more widely known later installments). However, writer/director Mark Pavia seemed to disregard the importance of pacing, especially during the initial fifty minutes. The scenes felt stretched out and drawn-out, which made them boring. He was clearly trying to create a sense of unease, and he achieved that somewhat. The movie doesn’t become even mildly engaging until roughly the last thirty-eight minutes, but it wasn't enough to fix what was wrong with it. It would have been more effective if it had lasted around an hour and fourteen minutes—the same length as “Home for the Holidays”—instead of its actual ninety-one minutes, which is seventeen minutes too long. There’s also a bothersome character who is stereotyped as "gay." The film does manage to surprise with its conclusion. Filming took place in New Mexico. GRADE: C- (4.5/10)
