Véro Tshanda Beya Mputu delivers a remarkably spirited and heartfelt portrayal in the lead role, deserving considerable praise. She earns her living singing at a Kinshasa bar, and things are going well until her teenage son requires medical care following a motorcycle accident. As is predictable, this creates significant financial strain, abruptly disrupting her life and forcing her to quickly re-evaluate her priorities. While possessing strength and self-assurance, she finds her purpose questioned when meeting "Tabu" (Papa Mpaka), leading her to question whether her previous existence was merely an incomplete version of what could be—provided she can secure her son’s health. The film rests on the foundation of two compelling performances, enhanced by energetic cinematography that conveys both the richness and precariousness of her world. Despite her resilience, her greatest vulnerability lies in her role as a mother. The relationship between these characters unfolds unexpectedly, and with the inclusion of local music and dance to enhance the story's realism, it feels like a believable depiction of maternal devotion. Occasionally, "Félicité" adopts a documentary style, allowing director Alain Gomis time to develop the actors’ characters in an absorbing and accessible manner.
