While not among Billy Wilder's most recognized works, this film near the end of his career proves to be quite fascinating. The narrative begins with the death of the actress Fedora (Marthe Keller), centering on the events that resulted in her being struck by a train—was it suicide or an accident? William Holden, as Hollywood producer "Dutch Detweiler," is clearly past his prime and decides to try and coax the celebrated star from her self-imposed exile at her Greek villa. She's surrounded by a group of people who seem more concerned with their own agendas than with hers, and it’s unclear how much of her isolation she chooses willingly. Hildegard Knef ("The Countess") and José Ferrer ("Dr. Vando") contribute to the overall sense of enigma, which feels like a critique of Hollywood's superficiality and extravagance—a quality wonderfully represented by the handsome but insubstantial Michael York. Aside from Knef’s excellent performance, the acting felt somewhat lackluster; there are echoes of "Sunset Boulevard," though I didn’t find them particularly strong. It lacks both the intensity and closeness of that earlier story, and Holden's portrayal doesn't compare to his previous work from 1950. I did appreciate it, even with a substandard print and noticeably truncated editing; however, the ending becomes predictable fairly early on, diminishing its potential for significant emotional impact. Perhaps this reflects the superficiality and fleeting nature that Tom Tryon noted in his book?
