It’s certainly not Christopher Nolan's strongest work, but it has become my top pick—or at least sharing the spot with 'Batman Begins'. My fondness stems from how much I appreciate the Norwegian film that inspired it, and also the delicate adjustments Nolan incorporated. The performances of Al Pacino, Robin Williams (who, to my understanding, played a villain for the first time here), and Hilary Swank are all exceptional; Swank’s work is particularly memorable, ranking among her finest roles alongside her portrayal in 'The Black Dahlia'. I found the five bonus features on my DVD—a two-sided disc that also includes ‘The Devil's Advocate’, which I haven't gotten around to watching yet—to be quite worthwhile. These included a discussion between Nolan and Pacino, 'Day for Night: The Making of...', 'In the Fog’ (featuring cinematographer Wally Pfister), Nathan Crowley on production design, and 'Eyes Wide Open', with sleep disturbance specialists; thankfully, I watched that one beforehand to get more out of the film itself. I would suggest this movie to anyone who enjoys modern crime thrillers, whether they've seen the original Norwegian version or not. There are enough alterations to make it a worthwhile experience for serious movie lovers.
