Ingrid Bergman portrays “Irene,” who is wed to “Albert” (Mathias Wieman), while also engaged in an affair with the considerably younger “Erich” (Kurt Kreuger). The strain of maintaining this deception begins to weigh heavily on her, leading "Irene" to contemplate ending her life. However, she finds that her secret isn't as secure as she believed; opportunist “Johanna” (Renate Mannhardt) is aware of the situation and demands 3,000 Marks for her silence. The film moves along at a brisk pace and features admirable performances from Bergman and Renate Mannhardt, who plays her calculating adversary. Nevertheless, the narrative feels rather straightforward and fails to generate any real suspense. It’s possible to anticipate what's coming throughout, and while Roberto Rossellini attempts to introduce a subtle feeling of threat, Bergman comes across as too agreeable to be entirely believable; she possesses the mild irritation of a small rodent.
