Reno on Fathers and Daughters

7/10 · Apr 24, 2016

I went in hoping for an emotional story from this director, and while it was certainly that, it wasn’t quite what I expected—though I did appreciate the depiction of a lovely bond between a father and daughter. It didn't shy away from difficult moments, starting with a tragedy and then showing a father trying to give his daughter a good life as he dealt with declining health. There’s also another storyline about the now-adult daughter struggling to connect with people who were important in her childhood alongside her father. Russell Crowe seemed really lively playing the part of a father who appeared much younger, particularly when displaying affection for his daughter. The young actress portraying the daughter was wonderful too. Amanda Seyfried's performance, as is often the case, was underwhelming. I like her personally, but she doesn’t always shine on screen. Aside from her scenes, it's not a bad film overall. The movie centers around a father and his daughter, yet the title suggests something more. You'll probably understand the reason for that if you watch it. The story of the girl and her father really should have been the whole focus. A few more special moments between them could have made it truly great. As anticipated, the ending was emotional, but the other storyline ended badly—which felt tied to Seyfried’s performance. I wanted to enjoy it, but couldn't quite get there. This film will likely elicit a mixed reaction; you might find yourself unsure how you feel about it, though most viewers will probably have a generally positive response. 7/10
