Manuel São Bento on Fatherhood

6/10 · Jul 15, 2021

I’ve seen quite a few movies centered on parenthood, but Fatherhood stood out because of who was starring and directing. Kevin Hart, known across comedy as one of the most recognizable performers, is fascinating to watch in a role that requires him to play a more realistic person experiencing profound sadness. Plus, Paul Weitz, who directed American Pie, is behind this Netflix film. It's hard not to be curious about what it would turn out like. Fatherhood follows familiar patterns for movies of its kind, but Hart delivers an impressive performance as the central character, and he’ll likely hold every viewer’s focus. He demonstrates once more that his talents go beyond comedy, skillfully conveying a wide range of emotions. Dealing with heartbreak and raising a child alone creates a build-up of feelings that make the film worthwhile. Alfre Woodard is excellent, as expected, but Lil Rel Howery doesn't quite manage to rise above some problems in the writing when it comes to the humor. The jokes themselves aren’t bad, but they often feel misplaced. There are several points where a bit of levity would have improved the mood, only for them to appear later in conversations that don’t need them. Howery is typically funny, but his character feels somewhat frustrating in this film. Even though it runs longer than necessary, I think this movie could be valuable for parents going through similar situations while still providing enjoyment and insight for others. Rating: B-
