Mark Wahlberg delivers an adequate performance as the boxer Stu, who becomes interested in a young woman named Carmen (Teresa Ruiz). Unable to win her over, he joins her church hoping it might help. However, he soon finds himself believing in "God" and attempts to become a priest, completely forgetting about the girl. At the same time, he learns that he has a progressive illness which will affect him as he gets older. It’s intended to be an uplifting story, but I didn't really connect with or feel much for “Stu.” His sudden and significant change of heart felt rushed and not well-supported by what was shown on screen. Aside from some good scenes featuring Jacki Weaver, who is always dependable as his mother, the rest of it felt somewhat thin. I never got a sense of what motivated this man! It’s pleasant to see Malcolm McDowell back in action, and Mel Gibson does fine as his detached father—but ultimately, the film feels like just another, occasionally heartwarming, biographical account of someone who lived a full life dedicated to inspiring others through faith while confronting hardships that many people experience. It's something you could watch, but I’m afraid it will likely be easily forgotten.
