Walter, portrayed by Cary Grant, finds himself reluctantly involved in supporting the war effort when Houghton, played by Trevor Howard, persuades him to live on a secluded Pacific island. His task is to observe and report Japanese activity, with the enticing reward of his own Scotch-bottle Easter egg hunt. Initially disgruntled by this assignment, Walter’s routine is disrupted by the arrival of Catherine, portrayed by Leslie Caron, accompanied by her six young daughters—the children of a French diplomat. She asks for his assistance, while he insists she should depart. The situation escalates into what seems like an impasse, but it doesn't last long; soon, Walter finds himself at the mercy of Catherine and her brood, and the narrative follows a rather conventional romantic comedy trajectory. While the plot isn’t particularly groundbreaking, there’s a pleasant rapport between Grant and Caron that brought to mind “The African Queen.” The children also add to the lightheartedness. The film takes some time to get going, and the ending feels somewhat hurried, but overall it's an enjoyable experience as both leads appear to be having fun playing their roles in contributing to the war effort—regardless of which side they may represent.
