Following an airline disaster claiming fifty-seven lives, investigator McBane (Glenn Ford) is tasked with uncovering what happened. He initially only has a pilot’s report indicating an engine fire followed by silence and then the crash. A survivor, stewardess Sally (Nancy Kwan), offers a somewhat different account of events, so McBane examines the debris but finds that neither narrative quite fits – something seems amiss. The lack of any obvious mechanical failure leads to suspicion falling on McBane's wartime friend Savage (Rod Taylor), though he rejects this possibility. Determined to exonerate him and find out what truly occurred, McBane risks his own standing and uncovers some unpleasant facts before deciding that another flight might be the answer. Ford delivers a solid performance; there’s an acceptable exchange during the inquiry with Bert Freed's opposing counsel Dillon, but considering it's centered around airplanes, there isn't much action to be found. Brief simulations occasionally appear, otherwise, this is a fairly subdued story told in a rather unremarkable way, full of dialogue and lacking real depth. Taylor’s presence feels limited, and by the end, the outcome felt predictable and ultimately disappointing.
