Dark Jedi on Fast & Furious 6

7/10 · Apr 5, 2014

This is a solid film, delivering pretty much what you anticipate from a Fast & Furious installment. It possessed the potential to be truly exceptional, but ultimately suffers because of some typical Hollywood blunders and a dismissive attitude toward the audience. Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson are ideal in their parts as traditional, tough, high-speed driving men’s types. Michel Rodriguez performs adequately; I am generally fond of Michel Rodriguez, so… These actors carry much of the film's weight for me. The supporting cast isn't bad, but feels more like padding compared to Vin and Dwayne. Naturally, this is a movie centered on fast cars, action sequences, and visual effects, and it doesn’t let you down in those areas. There's plenty of fast driving and lots of action and special effects. Of course, not everything is entirely plausible, which I can accept as long as it doesn’t veer too far into the realm of the ridiculously unbelievable—and unfortunately, that’s exactly what happened toward the conclusion. While the stunts and fight scenes were enjoyable, the entire airborne escape sequence was just absurd. They maintained a speed suitable for takeoff, both on land and in the air, for roughly 20 minutes? That must have been the longest runway ever. This exemplifies Hollywood's lack of respect for viewers. Do they genuinely believe audiences are that gullible, or are they themselves so clueless that they don’t realize how completely wrong it is? For me, this severely diminished what could have been a really good movie. Beyond that, the film provides a pleasing mix of macho dialogue, action, plenty of fast driving, some humor, more action, even more fast driving, and characters getting wrecked. Essentially, it includes everything you’d expect from an entertaining action film. The plot itself? Well, as far as I'm concerned, fairly routine, which did keep the action moving reasonably well, although the core concept and technical details—particularly this “EMP chip”—weren’t very convincing. Overall, it was a good and enjoyable movie that could have been great if not for Hollywood’s lapses in judgment.
