I recently watched this again to celebrate its anniversary or perhaps because of the upgraded visuals – honestly, it didn’t matter; it was simply wonderful to experience it on a large screen. I think it's comfortably the finest work from both the Coen brothers and Frances McDormand. She plays a pregnant police officer who has to handle a sudden increase in criminal activity within her town, which is wonderfully called "Brainerd." William H. Macy ("Jerry") and Steve Buscemi ("Carl"), often overlooked, contribute significantly to this drama, delivering an almost flawless combination of clever and humorous writing, some insightful performances, and a plot that occasionally veers into the strange – though perhaps it’s not so unusual given that it's set in Minnesota. The intentionally abrupt way people speak is likely to elicit both amusement and discomfort, which seems entirely intentional. It requires talent to act as these performers do here, shifting between seeming foolish and intelligent while simultaneously addressing a somewhat serious series of underlying narratives. You might not find every character agreeable; some certainly receive what they deserve – but this remains one of the strongest films from the nineteen nineties and is definitely worth seeing on a big screen if you have the opportunity.
