The narrative takes a while to build momentum, but I found myself enjoying this romantic comedy centered around the coast. It revolves around young Marius (Horst Buchholz), who is struggling to choose between pursuing a career at sea or settling down with his girlfriend, Fanny (Leslie Caron). His indecision isn't made any easier by his father, Cesar (Charles Boyer), who wants him to stay and run their small restaurant, or the older Panisse (Maurice Chevalier), who has designs on Fanny. Once the stage is set, these four characters guide us through a series of admittedly artificial situations that are largely saved by the playful back-and-forth between Boyer and Chevalier, whose constant threats of violence against each other provide much of the humor. The younger characters’ actions often trigger this dynamic, and when Fanny becomes pregnant, difficult decisions must be made, further complicating things as young Cesario (Joël Flateau) grows up believing his dad to be—well, it's fairly obvious. It does feel a bit lengthy at times, but when the script is strong, it allows these four characters to deliver a charming and humorous drama that balances just shy of slapstick and farce. Buchholz may not be an exceptional actor, but his youthful appearance, reminiscent of Dirk Bogarde, makes him a good contrast to Caron, and they both have good chemistry with the two older actors who seem to genuinely enjoy making this film, which gently pokes fun at sexism, ageism, and stereotypes. Her mother (Georgette Anys) also has some amusing moments; Raymond Bussières contributes extra lightness as the "Admiral," and ultimately, this spoof of small-town family life set against a backdrop of fish markets and sunshine is quite effective.
