It's disappointing when a movie seems poised for greatness, only to stumble at a crucial moment. That's what happens with writer-director Erica Tremblay’s latest film, which centers on an Oklahoma Native American woman (Lily Gladstone) from the Seneca-Cayuga Reservation as she searches for her missing sister (Hauli Gray) at the Grand Nations Powwow in Oklahoma City, bringing along her 13-year-old niece (Isabel Deroy-Olson). Their journey quickly evolves into a statewide series of unfortunate events that feels reminiscent of “Thelma & Louise” (1991). A great deal of this complex story is handled with considerable skill, highlighting the difficulties encountered by Native people—particularly women—and creating a suspenseful narrative that keeps you guessing. However, as the film progresses, the plot becomes less believable, leading to an ending that’s hard to accept, despite its sincere emotions. There are also some interesting details about the past woven into the story that deserved more attention and closure. It's regrettable that these flaws detract from the movie’s considerable strengths. These issues unfortunately lessen the impact of Gladstone’s exceptional performance—even surpassing her work in “Killers of the Flower Moon” (2023)—and Deroy-Olson’s impressive debut, as well as the strong performances from the rest of the cast. This AppleTV+ production has a great deal going for it, but it's unfortunate that its promise isn’t fully realized throughout. It comes close to being excellent, but ultimately falls short of what it could have been.
