Reno on Family Weekend

6/10 · Feb 4, 2018

This isn’t your standard moviegoing experience. While the narrative didn’t quite adhere to conventional storytelling methods, the premise felt almost too outlandish to be believable. Because the subject matter wasn't particularly weighty, every scene and occurrence needed to fit within its established boundaries, which wasn’t necessarily a negative thing. The oddity arises from it being rated R despite featuring what appeared to be mostly child actors—though they were actually in their twenties, portraying teenagers within the story. The plot revolves around a teen who holds her parents captive as a means of making them realize their mistake for missing one of her competitions. Her siblings and some other people get involved too. The weekend’s plan quickly unravels, leading to unforeseen developments. The final portion focuses on the repercussions of this action and how everything resolves itself. It's an unusual and enjoyable film. Even with all the humor, there are also moments that carry significant weight—like a consideration of family solidarity and supporting each other through thick and thin. Some viewers might find themselves moved by certain parts. There was one scene involving a knife in someone’s mouth where I genuinely worried something terrible would occur. Olesya Rulin delivered a strong performance; I'm looking forward to seeing her in more leading roles. Considering the film is four years old, Joey seemed younger than she does in other movies I’ve watched recently. She has the potential to become a major star. If you're tired of typical comedies but still want something fairly lighthearted, this is an above-average choice. _6.5/10_
