The film isn't centered on William 'D-Fens' Foster, despite his erratic behavior which some might focus on. A closer look reveals that it’s intended to illustrate how U.S. society has worn away at the idea of the average person. Those who follow conventional paths—earning a degree, starting a family, and working for a large company—find themselves feeling let down, as if they've been denied what was promised to them. The movie addresses issues like economic disparity, racism, harmful masculine ideals, corporate self-interest, urban decline, the weakening of human relationships, and even disappointing fast food experiences. Joel Schumacher’s film captures a sense of the late 1980s and early 1990s, including how police are affected by shrinking resources. His former spouse, who escaped a potentially dangerous situation by leaving before D-Fens' behavior escalated, is almost mocked for being too sensitive rather than acknowledged for her awareness and protective nature. A great deal can be understood through observing D-Fens’ actions, as well as those of his wife and the strong depiction of Prendergast played by Robert Duvall. Ultimately, *Falling Down* isn't primarily about D-Fens himself; it’s a commentary on the society that created him and many others who haven't accepted the consequences of widespread systemic problems.
