I recently saw this film and I have to say, it was enjoyable, though not exceptionally so. It’s less about depicting realistic city life and more focused on those minor frustrations we all experience but tend to ignore—and how one man transforms them into a personal vendetta. The movie begins in a fairly conventional way: traffic jams, honking horns, construction noise on a sweltering day, a broken air conditioner, a damaged window. Rather than simply dismissing these inconveniences with that familiar Monday morning feeling, he leaves his car and starts walking. Initially, it’s a shopkeeper selling expensive drinks who finds himself facing some property damage; only when physically threatened does he retaliate against two gang members. This is where the narrative takes an abrupt turn toward the bizarre. The gang members inexplicably find him again—and as someone from Britain, I found their ability to locate him in Los Angeles a bit hard to believe—then carry out a drive-by shooting just 20 feet away, narrowly missing him but hitting everyone else before crashing. He then goes to the wrecked vehicle, takes a bag of guns, and proceeds to shoot up a burger bar because they aren't serving breakfast, though he later decides lunch is acceptable anyway, and things continue along those lines. I’m not sure if this was intended to portray some kind of mental collapse stemming from his past decisions, but his capacity for empathy seems to vanish entirely. Initially, you can sympathize with the character, but as the film progresses, you gradually start to separate yourself from that connection until you realize you've just watched a movie about a man going around killing people purely out of anger at himself for ruining his family life. It makes me question whether this was the director’s plan or simply an accidental effect meant to influence the audience’s perception.
