It struck me that "Fallen Leaves" shares a central idea with Wong Kar-wai’s “In The Mood For Love” series – the difficulties encountered in love. However, these films feel like they inhabit completely separate realities; not even similar ones, really! Aki Kaurismäki's film is hilarious for the first portion, offering a comedy style that feels like a live performance. The characteristic dry humor featured minimal dialogue but was wonderfully cynical. The rhythm of the movie was excellent, and the actors were great at embodying this approach, to the point where I realized how much I cared about what happened to the story's people. The key distinction between Kaurismäki’s take and Wong Kar-wai’s is their overall perspective. "Fallen Leaves" leads you into a more optimistic world. It's not hard to understand why this film was so well-received at Cannes.
