The peculiar nature of Finnish culture—a blend of melancholy and a subtle, playful charm—can be hard to grasp, particularly for those unfamiliar with it. Writer-director Aki Kaurismäki attempts to explore this unique social dynamic in his newest film, a gently humorous story centered on two solitary individuals (played by Alma Pöysti and Jussi Vatanen) who are navigating everyday setbacks while hoping to find love in Helsinki. However, the movie struggles to truly connect with its audience. The plot unfolds through commonplace joys and frustrations, misunderstandings that feel familiar, but it’s questionable whether these alone can sustain a captivating film.
