Dana Andrews portrays "Eric Stanton," a man down on his luck who travels around trying to get by through charm and deception to secure meals and places to stay. He’s dropped off a Greyhound bus—the driver bore a striking resemblance to Ward Bond—in a quiet coastal town, where he goes to a diner to figure out how to reach San Francisco. However, his course is altered when he meets "Stella" (Linda Darnell), a waitress who isn't easily swayed by his advances. This small town seems to draw in swindlers; he also runs into "Madley" (John Carradine), and together they devise a scheme to obtain money from two affluent young women. The younger sister, "June" (Alice Faye), falls for Eric’s tactics and agrees to marry him. Things appear promising until "Stella" unexpectedly appears—dead—and the other sister, "Clara" (Anne Revere), who has experience being taken advantage of, is determined that Eric should be the prime suspect in the murder inquiry. The storyline becomes a bit tangled; the subsequent investigation feels almost beside the point, but Otto Preminger maintains suspense as the confident young man discovers that the locals he considered easy targets are actually quite perceptive—and vengeful. I didn't find the conclusion particularly satisfying, though the acting is noteworthy, notably from Andrews and Revere, with some good lines of dialogue and a limited amount of romance.
