I typically dislike films featuring Denzel Washington in roles as a clever police officer, government operative, or investigator; he seems stuck playing similar characters, and it feels like an underutilization of his abilities. He’s capable of much more than repeating the same kind of part. However, this is one of those times when that isn't the case. His performance is very good, but even so, Washington isn't what sticks with you. It’s Elias Koteas who makes an impression, and he appears for only a few brief moments onscreen. The unusual situation of someone else taking the most memorable part in a Denzel Washington film is striking, especially given how little time that character spends on screen. That alone puts it ahead of many movies, or at least makes it one people will recall. Those are not experiences you often have. There’s also a monologue reminiscent of William Holden's noir roles, and surprisingly, it works well, contributing to the movie’s mood more than it probably should. The story has an unsettling quality, and there are some exceptionally crafted and genuinely eerie sequences. From beginning to end, it is simply a skillfully made film with strong performances, one that warrants greater recognition. It's a title I frequently suggest to others.
