While settling her deceased sister’s affairs, Jax runs into Luce, an old college friend, who persuades her to take on some of the goals her sister Shiloh had planned before she died. This leads them on a journey to Thailand, where they intend to hike a dangerous trail four thousand feet above sea level to reach a sacred dragon said to consume their anxieties. Upon arrival, they find that local authorities have declared this route unsafe and off-limits. Do they abandon the plan? Not quite—they encounter Jon, who proposes to guide them for five thousand dollars. The price seems high, but it’s nothing compared to climbing the cliffs via a rickety ladder leading to a decaying wooden path held together by scaffolding poles supposedly constructed by monks years ago! With this region being susceptible to earthquakes, something inevitably happens as they make their way toward Devil's Elbow. To be honest, it isn't the plot's predictability that’s the biggest problem; that would be the writer’s fault for delivering some of the most uninspired lines I’ve ever heard, coupled with acting performances that don’t manage to convey any sense of fear or danger, even when the actors are balancing on a narrow plank. The final twenty minutes verge on being funny if they weren't so embarrassing, and the feeling of dread and height that was present in the first film (2022) is noticeably absent as the story’s surprises don’t feel believable. Even the cinematography feels off, like the camera was tilted sideways, and I never got the impression anyone had actually left the ground—even the drone operator. This would probably be an acceptable watch on a Friday evening while having a drink, but it's not something you'll want to see again.
