This quiet film explores growing up near a Quebec lake. The narrative centers on a boy, nearly fourteen (Joseph Engel), and his connection with a sixteen-year-old girl (Sara Montpetit). Despite being an independent production, the filmmaking demonstrates skill and allows the characters to develop naturally. They seem so at ease together that constant chatter isn’t needed. This results in a gradual drama presented with a respectful feel, illustrating both positive and difficult aspects of adolescence. A supernatural component exists which might lead viewers to reconsider the film afterward. I use “might” because, ultimately, it's about what I described earlier, I believe. While there is a genuine Falcon Lake located in southeastern Manitoba—where I’ve previously camped—this movie was filmed 1300 miles away on the western side of Lac Solar (also known as Lake Solar), just over an hour from Montreal. The film's length is 1 hour and 40 minutes, and it was made during the summer of 2021. GRADE: B
