It’s hard to find much to comment on with this movie, except for the fact that Guy Pearce and Alan Dale appeared together, which felt like a callback to "Neighbours." Pearce plays “Alex,” who along with his girlfriend “Kim” (Katie Holmes) lives in a large house. His daughter “Sally” (Bailee Madison) finds a cellar that had been sealed for a long time. As you might expect from a child her age, she ignores cautions from the concerned "Harris" (Jack Thompson), a relative of the previous owner who vanished under strange conditions, and quickly experiences consequences for her actions. The events that follow brought to mind a familiar Christmas film about not feeding or watering monsters—except this one features lots of frantic yelling and over-the-top reactions; I actually found myself hoping for a fast conclusion without children during the bath scene. While Guillermo del Toro is credited with writing the script, director Troy Nixey delivered a predictable plot that doesn't benefit from Pearce’s uninspired performance or Holmes’s consistently exaggerated acting—her career trajectory really seemed to stall quite some time ago. It fails to be frightening or inventive, and the final moments were more unsettling than anything shown previously. Could there possibly be another one? Best viewed and then quickly dismissed.
