Sidney Lumet’s *Fail Safe* was among the initial Hollywood films to seriously suggest that a technological breakdown could trigger nuclear annihilation. A technical issue sends American bombers toward Moscow with instructions to attack, and Henry Fonda portrays the President as he struggles frantically to prevent disaster from unfolding. Adapted from a novel by Eugene Burdick and Harvey Wheeler, the script is strong, the suspense constant, and the acting adequate for achieving the intended impact. It seems that globally we haven’t made any strides in lessening the chance of suddenly and catastrophically eliminating most people on Earth. In fact, things have gotten worse. More countries possess nuclear weapons, control structures are more dispersed, and the likelihood of error or accident has only increased. The film's central point is that a mechanical problem caused the crisis. Even now, politicians discuss AI-controlled weaponry, and it’s clear that AI safety isn’t close to perfect. We’re rapidly moving toward systems we don’t completely grasp, believing machines can make choices that could end civilization, certain that technology will rescue us from the issues technology itself creates. *Fail Safe* cautioned us sixty years ago that giving apocalyptic power to automated systems is foolishness. It seems like we didn't pay attention. Does this film still resonate? Yes, it does. Like other films by Lumet, *Fail Safe* has aged well. The black-and-white visuals, the confining sets, and close-ups of faces showing signs of stress during impossible decisions—it all continues to be effective, continuing to inspire dread. Henry Fonda's portrayal of a President who is both composed and desperate remains one of the most believable depictions of leadership facing unimaginable strain. *Fail Safe* feels just as pressing now as it did in 1964, perhaps even more so. We’re still engaged in this same game with higher risks and poorer chances of success. We are confronted with a choice between “nuclear winter” or the apocalyptic world depicted in *The Terminator* films. When will we begin to heed the warning?
