The ninth installment in the "Fast & Furious" franchise pushes its already outlandish action to a point where it becomes almost unbearable, while simultaneously attempting to tell an extended and convoluted story built around a fairly commonplace plot device. Justin Lin disregards any semblance of equilibrium that earlier movies managed to maintain, presenting incredibly foolish moments throughout entire action sequences—a stark contrast to the occasional action scene that could be accepted with some willingness to overlook unlikely events. The writing team, including Daniel Casey and Lin, fails to construct a worthwhile storyline centered on Dom’s long-lost brother, which ultimately undermines the development of Vin Diesel's character over the years. Reintroducing Han proves as superfluous as the implausible justification for his reappearance; this negatively impacts not only the film’s rhythm and length but also diminishes the emotional impact of prior films. The familiar cast members and impressive production quality are enough to prevent this entry from being a complete failure. If you can completely switch off your critical thinking skills for more than two hours, it might still provide some amusement at the cinema. Nevertheless, even dedicated followers of the "Fast & Furious" series probably won't consider this one of their favorites. Rating: D+
