After being postponed from its original summer 2020 release due to the pandemic, Universal has brought the newest installment of The Fast and The Furious franchise to audiences looking for some high-energy summertime entertainment. “F9 The Fast Saga” performed well in the countries where it’s already playing, earning close to $300 million total. Industry watchers are hoping this demonstrates that moviegoers are ready to return to theaters and that the film will be successful when it opens in the U.S. and other markets. The story begins with a trip back to the 1980s, showing young Dominic and his brother experiencing something life-altering that creates distance between them. The narrative then jumps to the present day, where Dom (Vin Diesel) and Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) are living apart from society while raising Dom’s son. When the team unexpectedly arrives with a mission from Mr. Nobody (Kurt Russell), who has disappeared, they go out to recover a missing piece of equipment, which puts them directly in harm's way against dangerous people and someone from Dom’s past. As anyone familiar with the series already knows, the storylines are frequently simple and occasionally ridiculous; they mainly exist so that the cast can come together and chase an object needed to save the day. As a result, viewers should anticipate plenty of fighting, gunfire, cars, collisions, and unbelievable stunts. While realism isn’t something connected with this franchise, the actors enthusiastically embrace the silliness, action, and chaos and give fans what they want. Although the middle section felt slow while introducing new and returning characters and explaining more of the plot, the action sequences are the extravagant highlights that have become a trademark of the series. Director Justin Lin understands this and his return to the franchise doesn’t try to introduce anything new, instead delivering exactly what fans expect. The large group of actors works well together, and John Cena is an intriguing addition to the cast. Viewers should remain in their seats after the credits for a bonus scene that effectively sets up the next film or spin-off and suggests some very interesting possibilities. Ultimately, “F9 The Fast Saga” provides audiences with a shot of high-speed adrenaline and a return to uncomplicated, over-the-top action when it's needed most.
