Letty Ortiz: "Hi, little Brian. I have a gift for you. Your Daddy gave me this, & now I'm going to give it to you. First and foremost, this movie, despite its USD 200 million-plus production budget, is undeniably enjoyable; but surprisingly, and reassuringly so, it’s also very family friendly. As a parent, I honestly didn’t expect it to be that good, given the usual trend with big blockbusters these days. I really love how the movie laughs at itself and seems to have a great time doing it. To those reviewers on IMDb who seem determined to find fault with this lighthearted picture for every possible reason: I only have three words for you: watch it again. That’s exactly what I did, and I ended up enjoying it even more the second time around; clearing up some of my initial doubts and truly appreciating how unserious "F9" really takes itself. Look out for the brief but hilarious scene where someone asks “Who's Dominic Toretto?”—it will help you understand what I mean. However, let me be clear: my review title isn’t meant to suggest this is the best movie ever made. The reason for the lively, parodical, and even mildly over-the-top film review title is simple: the "Fast And Furious" franchise consistently tries to outdo itself with increasingly wild action sequences, taking them all the way to outer space, among other utterly ridiculous stunts. If you haven’t seen it yet, watch the final official trailer for F9. In closing, here are some of the things I liked about the picture: 1) The sweet and familiar rapport between Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and Letty Ortiz (Michelle Rodriguez). 2) The brilliance with which several complex and protracted vehicle chase scenes were put together. 3) All those giant special effects, meticulously crafted to near perfection. 4) The film’s smattering of movie-reworking sequences—action or comedy re-creations of iconic cinematic moments from "Jurassic Park," "Terminator Three: Rise Of The Machines" (or “The Dark Knight”—whichever you prefer), and "Austin Powers." 5) And finally, there was a lot of genuinely funny stuff in F9, especially involving Tyrese Gibson ("Roman"), Ludacris (“Tej”), and Nathalie Emmanuel (“Ramsey”). If you didn't come to F9 expecting cars flying in outer space and other crazy things, then you came to the wrong place. If you’re one of those negative reviewers who would have preferred to see normal cars just driving around normally, I suggest watching a bus stop instead. This movie does exactly what it promises. Furthermore, Vin Diesel and John Cena play well off each other, while all the leading ladies fully embrace the fun. It's a generous 7.75 out of 10 from me.
